AS GOVERNMENT CONTINUES efforts to stabilise the economy, one lawmaker is pointing fingers at the private sector for not doing enough.

Opening debate in the Senate on the Appropriation Bill 2017 yesterday, Leader of Public Business in the chamber, Senator Maxine McClean, said the administration had done much to assist the private sector, including offering incentives and amnesties, but it had not seen the kind of innovation in the traditional sectors as desired.

“With some few exceptions, the indigenous private sector in Barbados has not, and I emphasise, has not, been as assertive and, indeed, as innovative as could be.

“Several segments of the private sector have benefited and continue to benefit from significant Government support and have not contributed to the kind of restructuring that I would want to see happening,” she charged. (WILLCOMM)
