Rains wash out road tennis

THE RAIN washed out all but one of Monday’s matches on the second night of action in the Massy United Insurance Clash Of The Titans road tennis championship at Dover.

Before the rains came Julian “Snake” Quimby had stopped Merlon Edwards 23-20, 21-14. Edwards, from the north of the island, had put Quimby under lots of pressure in the first match, locking the score from seven up to 12 and then rushing to 16-12.

Quimby battled back to 16 all and faced game point at 19-20 before surviving and winning a 38-ball rally to deuce the game. Two quick points handed the first game to Quimby, who took charge of the second game 20-12 before a final lunge by Edwards got him as far as 14.

The rain washed out the second match between Simon Bayne and Khamaal Collymore with the scores locked at 17 after Bayne had outplayed Collymore 21-12 in the first game. Bayne, in his languid style, had stalled his opponent, who brought along some of his fellow lawyers for a personal cheering section.

Collymore, who played with great restraint on his attacking style, led 4-1 and 10-4 before committing a slew of errors to allow Bayne to lock the scores at 16 and 17 before the weather intervened. That match was to be concluded last night.

The action continues today at 7 p.m. (KB)
