FAMILY AND FRIENDS gathered at St Philip The Less Anglican Church in St Peter on Sunday morning to celebrate with one of their own, Viteline Gilkes, who turned 100 years old.

The stalwart of the church, known also as Mother Gilkes, was confirmed there on February 4, 1930, and has been a member since then.

The centenarian, who was a member of the Mothers Union, Church Army and the choir, was born in Welch Town, and later moved to Diamond Corner, both in St Peter.

Gilkes, who was born on March 26, 1917, had five children – two sons, one of whom was deceased, and three daughters. She also has 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grands and six great-great-grands.

In his sermon, Reverend Jerome Small told the packed church, which included Barbados Labour Party St Peter candidate Colin Jordan: “Our sister celebrates her 100th birthday and we have to give thanks to God for this stalwart of the church. She is a blessing and she indeed lets her light shine as she plays her part, not only in church but in her home and her community.”

Gilkes was showered with many gifts and a large birthday cake, along with tributes from different groups within the church. (RL)
