TWO VIRTUALLY unknown women stole the show and the hearts of spectators when the Massy United Insurance Clash of the Titans road tennis tournament continued on Tuesday night at Dover.
Julie Howard scored an impressive 19-21, 31-29, 21-16 victory over Deborah Roach in the novice section that received tremendous applause in the opening match. That cheer was even greater from Howard’s large group of supporters including her parents who were all members of the New Dimension Church.
The bespectacled Howard had to battle from a game down against Roach in which the second game was deuced from 19 up to 29 before Howard won to set up the decider.
After taking and holding the lead to the end, Howard fell on her back with her feet and arms outstretched in exhaustion and celebration as Roach dropped on top of her to congratulate a worthy opponent. (KB)
