AKAYLA MORRIS has finally made it on the CARIFTA Games team after two years of trying.

The 16-year-old Harrison College student told SUNSPORT she was elated at the news. akayla-morris

“I feel really good after trying for like two years now. To actually make the team is really good for me. I hope from now on I can make it,” she said.

She explained that the time leading up to this accomplishment had not at all been easy since she had to put in work both in the classroom and on the field.

“It’s been an early season for me. I started training around August and I have been training very hard, doing hills, my gym and putting in extra training time.

“It’s kind of hard because I don’t get any free time at all. If I’m not training I’m at lessons so I try to do the majority of my work at lunch time so I can get the heavy load off my shoulders,” she said.

AT A GLANCE:

Long Jump Gold – 5.75 metres

200 Metres Gold – 24.68 seconds

100 Metres Silver – 12.02 seconds (same as winner)

100M Hurdles Bronze – 15.77 seconds

Though it often gets difficult, Morris, who has been running from age four, has made it clear that she won’t stop until she achieves her main goals.

“My long-term goal is to get an Olympic medal and I will not stop until I get an Olympic medal. I want to study to be a forensic accountant. I like accounts so until then I will be studying and training,” said the member of the High Performance programme.

At this year’s Barbados Secondary Schools Athletic Championships, she captured the Under-17 Girls’ division title with 34 points. (RG)
