MY BOYFRIEND lives with his mother and looks after her as she had a slight stroke a few years ago. It has been two years now that he spends almost every evening with me, but he cannot quite make up his mind about getting married. One week he says he wants to get married and the next he has his doubts.
We have had quite a few blow-ups over this and there are times we appear to be finished with each other. I do want us to get married and I have tried to convince him that I would not mind the attention he has to pay to his mother.
As a matter of fact, I also help out, as they do not live very far from my parents’ home. After all this I wonder why he can’t make up his mind.

Dear B.A:
Maybe it is because he cannot make up his mind. He seems to have a lot on his plate with taking care of his mother and I can understand his anxiety that marriage might make other demands on him so that he would not be able to perform his loving duties.
You could alter the situation by convincing him that you’d be glad to help him. I hope if you do make such a promise you’ll stick to it.
Explain how upset you are over his indecision. Let him know of your willingness to share in his caring for a mother he obviously loves and I feel all will be well.
