GEORGETOWN, Guyana – Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket made a spectacular return to the field of play with a display of talent and skill by the enthusiastic children of Guyana on Sunday.
More than 100 boys and girls participated in the lunchtime on-field demonstration at Guyana National Stadium as West Indies and Pakistan played in the second One-Day International of the Brighto Paints presents the Q Mobile Cup.
Azam Mohamed, the 11-year-old captain of Enterprise Primary School, had the honour of joining captains Jason Holder and Sarfraz Ahmed at the toss to launch the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket day of celebrations.
K.J. Singh, WICB’s Senior Project Officer, was delighted with the day’s event and promised more growth in the programme, now in its 18th year.
“The Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket programme continues to see significant growth. We have close to 140 000 young boys and girls from over 800 schools participating in the programme across the West Indies. This number will grow even more this year as we continue to promote the game both on and off the field,” Singh said.
“There are exciting times ahead and we are very happy that our valued sponsors, Scotiabank, have continued their tremendous support for the programme, which brings smiles to the faces of so many children across the Caribbean. We are not just coaching future cricketers but we are moulding lives for the future development in the region.”
Several members of the West Indies men’s and women’s cricket teams are graduates of the Scotiabank Kiddy Cricket Programme. These include Test and ODI captain Jason Holder, batsman Kraigg Brathwaite; as well as Shaquana Quintyne and Britney Cooper, who were part of the West Indies Women’s team which won the ICC World T20 tournament.
