OPPOSITION LEADER Mia Mottley is hoping Prime Minister Freundel Stuart will take a hint from British Prime Minister Theresa May.
Earlier today, May announced plans to call a snap general election on June 8. She said Britain needed certainty, stability and strong leadership following last year’s EU referendum.
“The country is coming together but Westminster is not,” May said, explaining the decision.
Mottley said the Barbados Labour Party feels Stuart should probably do the same.
“Prime Minister May has clearly recognised that there are times in the life of a Government when a mandate is required from the people of the country if the country is to move forward,” Mottley said in a statement.
“A Government must understand it has to go back to the people and ask, simply, what would you have us do? What direction do we take as a people? This gives the country its best chance of success, as it ensures that the action it endeavours to take has the country’s support,” the Opposition Leader added.
Mottley said that May recognises this, two years into her term, the Government’s term, on a matter, namely Brexit, that some may argue is not as fundamental as the one that Barbados faces.
“We are facing one that challenges our own economic and development path and the question is can we continue on this path without asking our own people in Barbados what direction do we take and have that credible answer in order for us to move forward in a surefooted manner to the benefit of all of our people,” said Mottley.
“I applaud what is being done by the leadership of Britain to put it on that stable and secure path,” the Opposition Leader concluded. (BA/PR)
