Mia wants more MPs

IN AN UNEXPECTED MOVE, Leader of the Opposition Mia Mottley has begun lobbying for far-reaching reforms in Parliament, arguing that Barbadians should not be held “hostage” to the legislative agenda of any political party.

On Monday night, she began publicly pitching for an increase in the number of representatives in the House of Assembly from the current 30, saying this would allow civil society to have a more direct say.

The proposal comes as the Opposition Barbados Labour Party sharpens its electioneering machinery ahead of general elections, and moves to mobilise the wider population, some of whom have vowed to stay away from voting due to discontentment with the political state of play in the country.
