THE BARBADOS LABOUR PARTY (BLP) is mourning the loss of a “family member”.

The country’s oldest political party sent out a statement of condolence today, remembering Edwin Atherley, who is suspected of drowning after walking into the water at Barclays Park, St. Andrew, on Friday, National Heroes Day.

Atherley was in attendance at the BLP’s annual picnic in commemoration of the birth date of the party’s founding father, National Hero Sir Grantley Adams, at the popular venue along the country’s picturesque East Coast.

“The Barbados Labour Party family is saddened by the drowning of Edwin Atherley in the sea off the Ermie Bourne Highway, St Joseph yesterday,” the BLP said in its statement.

“The party extends our heartfelt condolences at his passing to his loved ones, family and friends.

“The sudden loss of any life is tragic and is something one can never be prepared for. Because of this, when such incidents occur it deeply affects those left behind,” the political party said. “This is why as a party we grieve with those who were close to Mr Atherley.

“We want you to know that the BLP hurts with you because we, too, regarded him as a member of our family.” (BA/PR)
