Picnicker missing at sea

WHAT WAS SUPPOSED to be a day of relaxation and enjoyment for those who attended the Barbados Labour Party’s (BLP) annual Heroes Day excursion at Barclays Park in St Andrew yesterday turned out to be a day of grief for some.

According to eyewitness reports, a retired man, Edwin Atherley, parted from friends and community folk to take a dip in the sea at the popular St Andrew beach, and did not return.

Sylvester Belgrave, who travelled on the same coach to the Ermie Bourne Highway as Atherley, said that the Lodge Road, Christ Church resident used to work for Government, but did a little fishing after he had retired.

Merlene Austin recalled that Atherley was sitting, eating and drinking behind her under a tree. She said she told him not to go into the water, but he did not heed her advice. (SB)
