A SOLID START. That’s how head coach Seibert Straughn has described the performance of Barbados’ champion girls’ track and field school, Christ Church Foundation, on the opening day of the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia on Thursday.

Both CARIFTA Games silver and bronze medallist Tiana Bowen and Yuriko Harewood finished eighth in their individual events while the 4×400-metre relay team of Rosette Hoyte, Bowen, Hannah Connell and Sarah Belle finished 20th in a time of 3:54.21 minutes.

The 4×100-metre relay quartet of Jaliyah Denny, Connell, Laneekwa Gibson and Belle was disqualified after finishing second in their heat and 10th overall with a time of 47.96 seconds.

“It is a very encouraging and improved performance from the girls. Tiana was eighth among 22 entries while Yuriko was eighth among 26 entries,” said Olympian Straughn, who has accompanied the 12-member Foundation team of seven girls and five boys, along with coaches Denise Blackman and Ricky Carter.
