IT IS NOW JUNE 1 for the roll-out of the plastic bag deterrent fee.

But the penalty per bag is still to be decided as the retailers and the Future Centre Trust work to reduce the amount of plastic bags in the environment without putting consumers under more economic hardship.

This has been revealed by the Future Centre Trust’s man on the Plastic Bag Deterrent Working Group as it opted for a soft launch at the beginning of this month, with the major roll-out in a few weeks.

Barney Gibbs noted that because the May 1 date was originally mooted, there were consumers who were already turning up with their reusable bags. (HLE)
