MINISTER OF SPORTS Stephen Lashley has defended the huge amount of funding the National Sports Council (NSC) has pumped into the sport by citing road tennis’ indigenous and developmental nature.
Lashley expressed the sentiment during a meeting with all of Barbados’ sporting federations on Wednesday when questioned about the approximate $500 000 Government spent on road tennis over the last five years.
“The fact, though, is that I don’t make any apologies for the funding given to road tennis. It is funding provided to develop road tennis and you would be aware that five years ago road tennis would not have reached the peak that it has now,” Lashley said emphatically.
“We call that developmental assistance of road tennis. I don’t think you can classify it the same way as volleyball. Road tennis, of course, had to be pulled up. We had to insert ourselves in terms of the organisation of road tennis [because] it did not have an active federation.
