Cataract cases relief soon

THE BACKLOG OF OVER 500 patients awaiting cataract surgery at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QEH) should be eliminated by the end of June.

This represents a three-month extension to the Cataract Initiative programme launched in January to eliminate the long waiting list.

Consultant head of the Department of Ophthalmology, Dr Trevor Drakes, said he remained confident Barbados had the expertise needed to cope with the load and did not need to look to Cuba for assistance.

Drakes yesterday announced the team at the Lions Health Care Centre last month completed surgery on 256 of the 537 cataract patients. (GC)
