THE CIRCULATION of videos on social media showing schoolchildren engaging in violent behaviour has added fuel to the discusion about cellphones in schools among parents and the teaching fraternity.

During a panel discussion held recently at the St Barnabas Church Centre, St Michael, entitled The School And The PTA As Vital Partners, cellphones in schools was one of the focal points during the debate.

The discussion, presented by the Anglican Church, Home & Family Month Committee, in association with the Barbados National Council of Parent-Teacher Associations (BNCPTA), got so heated that it exceeded its scheduled finish time by over an hour.

BNCPTA president Shone Gibbs called for a pause on the introduction of cellphones in schools. He was responding to the video circulating on social media of a fight involving Lester Vaughan students that led to three of them being arrested and charged. (SB)
