THE UNDER-PRESSURE sugar cane industry is trying to make a comeback, but too much trash is getting in its way.

Portvale factory manager Rapheal O’Neal told the DAILY NATION yesterday that when production ground to a halt over the weekend for the 2017 harvest, the amount of sugar generated had fallen short of the 12 000-tonne target.

He revealed they had only been able to produce just over 10 000 tonnes this year, though this was up from the 7 000 recorded in 2016.

Giving a breakdown, he said of the total 10 134.87 tonnes, 6 517.33 were bulk sugar for export, while the remaining 3 617.54 tonnes went towards bagged Barbados Traditional Sugar, which was sold locally. (SB)
