FROM THE FIRST STEP of the enslaved on Barbadian soil, to the place of their enslavement, to the rolling hills that have entombed their remains for centuries.
This was the tour that hundreds of Barbadians enjoyed yesterday as the National Cultural Foundation hosted its Crop Over Heritage Bus Tour, subtitled Bittersweet Stories Of Sugar, Molasses And Rum.
Led by historian and author Morris Greenidge, deputy director of the Barbados Museum Historical Society Kevin Farmer, and retired lecturer in history Trevor Marshall, the tour started at Cavans Lane, The City – the burial ground of countless Africans who did not make it alive across the Atlantic – with a moment of silence.
The audience then watched as handcuffed and shackled “slaves” were led ashore under the whip of a plantation manager, who threatened to leave the one slave who had dropped right where he had fallen. (HLE)
