EXERCISE TRADEWINDS moved into a different phase yesterday with a number of simulations that tested the National Emergency Management Plan.

Co-director of Exercise Tradewinds 2017 Major Carlos Lovell said the entire exercise was of major benefit to the emergency response personnel of Barbados and all participating countries.

The simulations, which ran simultaneously at different locations across the island, including Pile Bay, Spring Garden, where they were 120 casualties from falling trees and falling buildings; while at Harrison Cave, St Thomas, there was a cave-in that blocked the entrance to the cave, leaving 60 people trapped following a 7.3 magnitude earthquake.

There was also an exercise at sea where the maritime forces responded to the fallout from a ruptured oil pipe line also caused by the earthquake.  (LK)
