AFTER THREE rounds of the five in the KSM National Seniors Chess Championship, FIDE master Dr Philip Corbin is the leader with a maximum of three points.
Corbin defeated Mark Lowe in his third-round match with a polished performance, in which he took a one-pawn advantage into the end game and showed good technique in converting the victory.
This was a little out of the mould of Corbin, who has been known for his swashbuckling attacks against opponent’s kings in true kamikaze style. He continued his good form after coming off a victory in the 2017 National Heroes Day Open tournament.
Lying in second spot on two and a half points is the evergreen Othneil Harewood, who defeated the higher rated Anthony Earlam, who is making a return to the boards after a layoff of almost two years. (PR/EZS)
