THE 7-12 CATEGORY in the Scotiabank Junior Calypso Monarch competition outshone that of the 13-18s on Saturday night at the Lester Vaughan School.

The topics addressed during the first junior tent for this year’s Crop Over festival included a number of social issues such as violence, bullying at school, speeding and potholes.

Many of the songs had infectious melodies and catchy hooks, but the youngsters had a challenge with delivery because some of the lines were loaded with too many words.

There were a number of standouts in the first half. Reserve Manni Manni (Emmanuele Graham) warmed up the audience with Slow Down, before defending monarch Summa (Summa) Sergeant opened the show with Potholes. (NS)
