Million-dollar theft trial to start

A CLERICAL OFFICER accused of stealing more than $1 million belonging to the Psychiatric Hospital will go on trial today in the No.2 Supreme Court.

Anderson Ryan Ince, 43, formerly of Yearwood Road, Sugar Hill, St Joseph, first appeared on the charges in July 2006 but was not required to plead.

He was remanded for two weeks but then released on $100 000 bail.

When he appeared in the High Court yesterday, Ince, who now lives in Hannays Road, St Lucy, denied stealing the money – $1 118 500 – which belonged to the hospital and was maintained by the Central Bank of Barbados. The offence allegedly occurred between August 1, 2003, and August 1, 2005.

Another charge was that Ince directly engaged in transactions totalling $1 118 500, the proceeds of crime between 2003 and 2005 – a money laundering offence.

He is being represented by Steve Gollop while Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Donna Babb-Agard QC is leading the Crown’s case.

The trial will have about 55 witnesses.

Justice Michelle Weekes and a nine-member jury will hear the matter. (TKS
