THE LIVES OF elderly residents and staff at the Geriatric Hospital will be made more comfortable.
CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank joined members of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCCI) to greatly improve conditions for residents at the hospital.
The group donated more than $20 000 to refurbish 30 bathrooms at the hospital, a gesture which hospital manager, Joanell Oxley-Worrell said would help “improve the delivery of health care services to the hospital’s elderly clients”.
“We, at the hospital, are therefore very appreciative of this substantial donation,” she said, as she thanked the donors.
The formal donation took place recently at the Hilton Barbados. CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank director, corporate banking Barrington Watson presented the cheque.
CIBC FirstCaribbean managing director Donna Wellington said the bank “readily accepted the offer to be part of this worthwhile venture that helps to improve the quality of care to our senior citizens”.
“Our donation demonstrates the bank’s appreciation for the contribution which they have made to the island’s development. They have formed the backbone of this country and we now need to ensure that they are comfortable in their twilight years,” she added.
The outreach to the hospital resulted from a challenge issued by the chamber’s secretariat staff to members during Barbados’ 50th Independence Anniversary asking them to undertake a charitable event.
The Geriatric Hospital was identified as the recipient of their goodwill and members led by CIBC FirstCaribbean International Bank; Sagicor and Abed Enterprises teamed up for the project. (PR)
