TURTLE PAIN

ANECDOTES of the effects of plastics on turtles became a reality yesterday when the Barbados Sea Turtle Project lost one of its endangered green sea turtles.

After weeks of not being able to feed after it ingested bits of plastic bags, rubber bands and even human hair, the turtle finally died around midday yesterday.

“We can say for certain the reason this turtle died was because of our (human) activity. This is one of the consequences of our actions,” said an upset Barbados Sea Turtle Project director of public awareness and education, Carla Daniel.

This is the first definitive evidence of the effect of plastic ingesting on turtles in Barbados since, Daniel told the Saturday SUN, turtles who ate plastics would usually die at sea. (HLE)
