Barbados Pride donate to fund

THE Barbados Pride cricket team has joined the list of contributors to the Elliott and Loretta Scholarship Trust Fund.

Jason Harper, chief executive officer of the cricket franchise, made a $10 000 donation to the Governor General at Government House yesterday.

Sir Elliott graciously thanked Harper and the team for their donation to the trust fund.

He also added the fund would seek to assist two young people to pursue their education in September, at either the University of the West Indies Cave Hill campus or the Barbados Community College, in the areas of engineering, accounting, architecture, information technology and marine engineering.

“We’re seeking to assist financially challenged Barbadian students. The number of students to be benefited depends on the size of the pot,” he said.

“As you would know it is very expensive to provide education at the university in Barbados. We’ve restricted selection to the University of the West Indies Cave Hill campus, and the Barbados Community College.

“We will not be assisting students to go overseas because if you can afford to study overseas you would have to know where your funds are coming from. Students must be citizens of Barbados and must be accepted for one of the courses previously outlined at the institution,” he said.

Harper noted when the opportunity arose for them to contribute to the cause, it was one they could not pass up.

“In Barbados, you would think that education and sport don’t go hand in hand, but truth and in fact they do. It was an easy decision for us to make to assist moving forward with the scholarship fund,” he said.

For the next three years, the Barbados Tridents franchise have pledged their support to the scholarship fund. (RA)
