ON THURSDAY AUGUST 24 the Garfield Sobers Gymnasium will become a melting pot of true Caribbean dance talent with the staging of the Signal Dance event for CARIFESTA XIII.

This much anticipated occasion entitled Dance Caribbean! – In the Contemporary will feature the ‘Caribbean cutting edge of excellence’ with a number of internationally acclaimed dancers like Julia Headley – Barbadian dancer, with the National Theatre Mannheim, Germany; Valencia James – another Barbadian based in Hungary; Tania Isaac – St Lucian born performer and professor dancing in the USA; Jamie Thompson – from Belize, a professional dancer in Dallas USA, and Richard Ambrose of St Lucia.

These soloists will be joined on stage by a number of well known groups from around the region namely JeanguySaintus’ and Ayikodans from Haiti; the Lena Blou’s Company Trilogie of Guadeloupe; from Martinique – Company Christiane Emmanuel; L’Antoinette Stines’ and L’AcadCo of Jamaica, along with the COCO Collective of Trinidad and Tobago.

Produced by the CARIFESTA Secretariat, the show is expected to attract a huge number of dance enthusiasts. Artistic coordinator for the ten-day Festival, Dr John Hunte, said the show promises to educate, energise, entertain and excite.

“We have attempted to amass a wide range of regional talent from around the world. I can’t wait to see them on stage here. I expect that this will be one of, if not the most, well patronised events of the festival,” he said.

Hunte went on to add that the theme would allow the dancers “to use modern concepts of Caribbean identity to unfold visions of ourselves and our common legacy as we embrace our global future.”

There will be premium and general tickets on sale soon; both online at TicketLinxz.com and the various CARIFESTA box offices. A special discount will be available for students with IDs. The show is slated to start at 7 p.m. (PR)
