THE MINISTRY OF Tourism and International Transport has reassured the public that the Grantley Adams International Airport remains operational.
In a statement issued in response to social media posts, the Ministry explained that at approximately 6 a.m. today a backup battery connected to the communications array in the Radar Section of the Air Traffic Services facility malfunctioned.
“The Barbados Fire Service was contacted and a decision was made to close the Air Traffic Services Building while the cause of the odour emanating from the faulty battery was investigated.
“At no point in time were communications lost as a result of a systems failure, nor was the Grantley Adams International Airport closed,” the statement continued.
The Ministry added that Air Traffic Control services were suspended for approximately one hour, leading to the delay of an international flight by 30 minutes and the diversion of two regional flights.
The Air Traffic Services Building reopened and resumed normal operations at approximately 8 a.m., the Ministry said. (MTIT/BGIS)
