BARBADOS WAITED UNTIL the final game of the Windward Islands Football Association Men’s Football Tournament to pull out all the stops last night, and made a comfortable 2-0 victory over newly crowned champions Grenada.

The Bajan Tridents, who maintained greater possession throughout the game, opened the scoring in the eighth minute with Zeco Edmee justifying why he was awarded this year’s Digicel Premier League Golden Boot Award, with a long shot that settled in the back of the net after intercepting a bad pass from Grenada’s captain Jake Rennie.

With a lot more purpose and some very impressive footwork, the local boys pressured the Spice Boyz, ending the first half 1-0.

In front of a practically sold out crowd equipped with chants and drums, Barbados were just as effective in the second half, with the formidable combination of Morvant Caledonia’s Shaquille Belle and Edmee seeming to strike fear in the Grenadian defence.

The last goal of the match came in the 65th minute after skipper Mario Harte, playing the ball on the byline, sent it straight past the keeper Jason Belfon and into the back of the net.

Even with three changes made during the game and three extra minutes in the second half, the Bajans were unstoppable and they ended the tournament on four points.

Grenada took the top spot after securing seven points throughout the tournament, with Dominica ending on six points as the only undefeated team and St Lucia third with five points. While St Vincent and the Grenadines and Barbados both ended on four points, St Vincent had the greater goal difference which left Barbados in the cellar position. (RA)
