INTERNATIONAL MASTER Terry Farley clinched the second qualifier of the Digicel National Chess Championships in fine style when he won his final-round game on Thursday at the Bridgetown Chess Centre.
He finished top of the table on eight points from nine rounds, after entering a round late and winning all his succeeding games.
In the last round, still just a half-point ahead of eventual second-place finisher Kemp Lynch, Farley was fortunate to garner the full point from reigning Under-20 national champion Justin Parsons, especially after Lynch had downed Donna Murray to temporarily slip into the lead and apply a little pressure on the leader.
After coming out of the opening even, Parsons played enterprisingly in the middle game and brought Farley to what most pundits saw as a drawn endgame. However, Parson’s technique was found wanting and Farley used his experience to win a pawn and eventually set up a mating net from which Parsons could not escape. (PR)
