THE POLICE COMMISSIONER who brought community policing to the fore believes the upsurge in gun violence and crime is the result of the reduction of that aspect of crime prevention.
In addition, retired Commissioner of Police Orville Durant has placed the blame squarely on the Ministry of Home Affairs for the “haphazard way” it has been dealing with crime in Barbados.
“We should have, by now, a committee which looks at the entire crime situation, particularly looking at those matters that can be dealt with through the primary prevention, secondary prevention and then the tertiary prevention,” he said.
Durant retired in 1995 after leading the Royal Barbados Police Force from 1982. He was speaking to the Sunday Sun in the wake of a number of shootings in recent times – the last of which occurred on Friday afternoon, near the Fairchild Street market, and which left two people, a man and a woman, injured.
