New season, new points system

THE 2017 GODDARD ENTERPRISES Limited Division 1 volleyball season serves off today at 4 p.m. at the Oldbury Gym in St Philip with a new points system promising to add more focus to the competition.

The customary knockout competition will be used as the tester for the 13 senior teams. Double-crown champions Pan American Life Insurance Warrens Sports Club women and Chargers men are looking to defend their knockout titles.

UWI Blackbirds have been elevated to the top women’s division, bringing the number of women’s teams to seven, one more than the number of men’s teams in the top division – for the first time in the history of local volleyball.

Teams will gain only five points for winning the three-best-of-five matches in straights sets, unlike previous seasons when a win netted the maximum points. Dropping sets will mean dropping points, with the teams winning sets gaining those commensurate points. (KB)
