ATTORNEY GENERAL AND Minister of Home Affairs Adriel Brathwaite believes young offenders need to have a second chance for there to be a reduction in the vicious crime cycle.
He acknowledged that prison remained one of the most popular punishment options, but said rehabilitation of youngsters especially was necessary.
“In Barbados, we have a theory that when one commits a crime, he should be incarcerated,” he said. “We need to be able to demonstrate to our public that in fact these initiatives that we are taking [to] move our young people away from crime do not mean that we are being soft on crime.
“There is a time and a place for serious punishment but there is also time for intervention where the youth are involved, where the softer skills are required. (TG)
