CARIBBEAN POLITICIANS HAVE been condemned for failing to launch a cohesive response to the attack on the region’s international business and financial services sector.
Minister of International Business Donville Inniss delivered a no-holds-barred criticism of CARICOM politicians last Friday, charging they had “failed the region” when it came to the international business and financial services sector.
Pointing out the sector was the largest net contributor of foreign exchange to the region, Inniss called on regional members of the Society of Tax and Estate Professionals (STEP) to take action to influence a collective stance by the regional decision-makers.
He suggested to the representative gathering of lawyers, accountants, tax professionals and estate professionals that instead of falling prey to a divide and rule tactic, CARICOM should be investing in helping the region to “come to a CARICOM position” on matters such as correspondent banking and blacklisting by powerful groupings such as the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and the European Union.
