WHEN STIFFY’S TIP An’ Ben Ova started to play, the Frank Collymore Hall audience probably wondered how the Jamaican dance company L’Acadco got a hold of it so soon.
But if they knew about the dance group, founded in the 1980s by Jamaican dancer and choreographer, L’Antoinette Stines, the company’s membership includes dancers from the Bahamas, Grenada, Bermuda, Cuba, Guyana, Suriname and Trinidad and Tobago and, of course, Barbados (four dancers and drummer Richard Salief Smith).
That piece was called Affi Dance Dis and co-choreographed by talented Bajan dancer Aisha Comissiong (hence the song reference). The piece was pure bashment with a taste of dancehall.
Stines’ distinctive choreography was evident, but what was pleasing was that core members got to showcase their choreography skills. (NS)
