THE ELECTORAL AND BOUNDARIES Commission has advised that the process of updating the Register of Electors is continuing.
Therefore, the Commission is requesting all qualified persons 18 years and over who have not yet applied to be registered as electors, or who have not been photographed for a Barbados Identification Card, to do so.
In addition, all registered electors who have changed their addresses but have not yet notified the Electoral Department are being encouraged to complete the Change of Residence Forms and file them with the Department or at any of the 30 constituency registration centres.
A person qualifies to be registered as an elector for a constituency if he or she is a citizen of Barbados; or a Commonwealth citizen who has resided in Barbados for a period of at least three years immediately before the qualifying date. In addition, they must be 18 years or over and must have resided in that constituency for at least three months before the qualifying date, this is, the date on which a person applies to be registered as an elector.
Persons registering for the first time are required to produce the original and one copy of their documents. Those documents which must be presented include: Birth Certificate (for non-nationals who cannot produce a birth certificate, the passport and a copy of the page with the personal details will be accepted for new registrations only); Registrar’s Certificate (for a change of name done under the Change of Name Act); and a Marriage Certificate and any other document to verify name, date of birth and nationality.
Commonwealth citizens are also required to bring the original and one copy of the documents, including the letter issued by the Chief Immigration Officer in support of their status. Documents which must be presented in support of a person’s immigration status, for registration as an elector, include: Citizenship Document; Immigrant Status Certificate and Permanent Resident Certificate.
