A civil engineer is expected to appear in court today charged in connection with the discovery of 418.8 pounds of cannabis worth over $837 000.

He is 34-year-old Duane Ryan Gittens of Lot #405 Westwood Drive, St James.

Police say the drugs were found when members of the Drug Squad and Customs Enforcement Division conducted an operation at the Bridgetown Port on August 31.

Forty pails of adhesive glue, each containing a quantity of cannabis wrapped in brown tape, were discovered.

Investigations further revealed that the pails arrived in Barbados onboard a cargo vessel from St Lucia. They were consigned to a company in Barbados.

Investigations led to Gittens’ arrest and he was formally charged with the offences of possession of cannabis, possession with intent to supply, trafficking cannabis and importation of cannabis.

He is expected to appear in the District “A” Magistrates’ Court. (PR/NB)
