The following is a message from Opposition Leader Mia Mottley on the passage of Hurricane Irma.

It is with profound sadness that we received the news of the death and destruction caused by Hurricane Irma across the Leeward Islands this week. Their infrastructural loss is devastating, and we can only imagine the hurt they are experiencing today.

Though natural disasters have always been a fact of life in human history, one can never get used to the devastation and loss of life that they bring.

We urge all Barbadians to support any official effort, whether organized by Government or a recognised NGO like the Barbados Red Cross, to assist our Caribbean brothers and sisters in need.

It is our hope that those Barbadians whose expertise can be utilized in the rescue and then rebuilding effort in these countries can also lend their assistance.

With Hurricane Jose following the same path as Irma, we pray that those countries will somehow be spared from the full ferocity of yet another hurricane.

We ask all Barbadians to keep our Caribbean brothers and sisters in our prayers.
