BARBADIANS ARE STILL WAITING for a drop in milk prices following a proposed milk subsidy by Government.
Last October 1, the Barbados Agricultural Society (BAS), in collaboration with about six members of the Barbados Beef and Dairy Producers’ Association and other stakeholders, imported 174 pregnant heifers and 20 calves from the United States.
President of the association, Brian Allan, said this project, valued at $1.2 million, was to be in coordination with a dairy subsidy outlined by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler in his Budgetary Proposals of June 2015.
A cess was to be applied at five per cent on all milk products containing 60 per cent or more liquid fresh cow’s milk and ten per cent for all other milks and milk substitutes, including milk powder to fund a milk subsidy. (SB)
