King’s Davis Cup mission

FOR DARIAN KING, the buzz of the US Open is over. His focus is now squarely on leading Barbados to victory in next week’s top-of-the-table Americas Davis Cup Group 2 showdown with Venezuela at the National Tennis Centre in Wildey.

King, the talk of the town after his enthralling first-round duel with world No. 6 Alexander Zverev of Germany in the US Open, says he will not be complacent even though none of Venezuela’s players for next week’s (September 15, 16 and 17) tie are in the top 700 in the world.

“Davis Cup represents the best players from each country and I am looking forward to what should be a good tie. I know a couple of players in the Venezuelan team and I have actually played doubles with their No. 1, Ricardo Rodriguez.

“Tennis is played on the day and I don’t want to go into the match presumptuous. I am going to go out there and give it my best against whoever I play, even if the guy is ranked 1 000th in the world. I am going to go out there and fight for every ball and try to play my best. (MK)
