Arch Cot ‘surprise’

MORE THAN A QUARTER-MILLION DOLLARS was handed over to the Ministry of Transport and Works (MTW) five years ago for the debushing, fencing off and construction of new access roads in the area of Arch Cot Terrace, Brittons Hill, St Michael, in the wake of the fatal 2007 cave-in that swallowed up the Shalom apartment building.

Still, the area remains a huge eyesore, with overgrown bush surrounding the exposed hole where the apartment fell 75 feet into a cavern on August 26, 2007, taking with it Donavere Codrington, his wife Cassandra and their children Shaquanda, Shaquille and Yashiro.

DAILY NATION investigations have found that Cabinet approved almost $300 000 in 2009 for the special projects, which was turned over in April of 2012 to MTW.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs, Gayle Francis-Vaughan, told the DAILY NATION she was “shocked and surprised” residents in the area were still making such complaints about a lack of safety and upkeep of the area. (BA)
