Defiant Lewis triumphs

THE COMEBACK OF COMEBACKS. For 45 minutes Haydn Lewis looked beaten and crushed against Venezuela’s Luiz Martinez. After Lewis had been badly beaten in the opening set and was down 3-1 in the second, Barbados’ Davis Cup tie hopes were vanishing and fast.

Lewis, though, is not a man who should be written off. Down and almost out at a similar stage against Mexico three years ago, this was déjà vu as Lewis tenaciously clawed his way back to win a topsy-turvy duel 2-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4.

That win gave Barbados the tie 3-2 and a place back in Group 1 of the Americas Zone, where they will get the chance to play against giants Argentina and Brazil.

Lewis sealed the deal after wonder boy Darian King locked the tie in the morning by blasting past Venezuelan No. 1 Ricardo Rodriguez 5-7, 7-5, 6-2, 6-3. (MK)
