Land tax shock

Some property owners received the shock of their lives when they recently opened their land tax bills.

Expecting to pay a bill similar to the one they paid in 2016, several peoples were left scratching their heads when they realised they would have to pay, in some instances, more than four times the amount they paid the previous year.

And while manager of communications and public relations with the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) – the entity responsible for land tax billing – Carolyn Williams-Gayle told the SATURDAY SUN the increased bills were as a result of property reevaluation done by BRA, some owners were still left puzzled as to the huge jump.

Williams-Gayle said a notice informing owners that officers from BRA would be out in the field doing a re-evaluation of properties had been posted since 2016. (RB)
