Barbados just couldn’t hold on.
Guadeloupe are going home with the very first CARIFTA Triathlon Championships’ crown, having won four of yesterday’s six events at the Garfield Sobers Sports Complex to come from behind and overtake the hosts in the points table.
Trailing the home team by nine entering the final day, Guadeloupe rode huge victories from Leynce Gossec, Chrismaldy Robert and Noyon-Mathurin sisters Parys and Anh-Lee, to finish with a meet-best 73 points – eight more than the second-placed Bajans.
And they wasted no time making up the deficit either, as Anh-Lee captured the 11-12 girls’ triathlon by completing the 200 metre swim, 7.5k ride and 1.5k run in 38 minutes and 9.73 seconds after compatriot Verin Mathis (26:02.06) placed second in the boys’ equivalent. (JM)
