Forget monikers “World Boss” and “Michael Jackson”! The greatest road tennis player Julian White’s new nickname is “The Comeback Kid”!
Moving to the tune of “Beat It”, White put on a “Thriller” of sheer class to come from two sets down and game and match point 19-20 in the fourth set to upend favourite Mark “Venom” Griffith 14-21, 14-21, 21-16, 22-20, 21-19 to capture the Barbados Public Workers Co-Operative Credit Union Monarchs of the Court at the De Big Rock Arena on Sunday night.
With a massive crowd ringing the court and creating the atmosphere of the Roman Coliseum, both gladiators wielded their racquets with breathtaking skills. Griffith took the first two games with sheer speed and uncanny returns while his opponent struggled to gain any advantage.
With White’s back to the wall, the emperor in the chair, Tito Ellis was about to give the “thumbs down” signal for the screaming spectators to see an honourable death given to White. (KB)
