The Bridgetown Port is expecting 34 additional cruise ship calls – beyond the 424 in total last year – in the coming weeks as a direct result of the impact of recent hurricanes on other ports and cruise destinations in the region.

The increased activity will begin tomorrow when it welcomes close to 3 000 passengers from the Royal Caribbean cruise ship Adventure Of The Seas, ending a three-week hiatus in cruise activity.

This ship’s call marks the beginning of what is expected to be a busy session for cruise tourism, with six cruise lines forced to rearrange their schedules, putting Barbados on their itinerary in place of some of their regular ports of call severely affected by the hurricanes.

Hurricane Maria severely affected the port of San Juan, the hub for Southern Caribbean cruises, forcing its temporary closure. However, some cruise lines have now resumed cruises to the Southern Caribbean from Puerto Rico. (GC)
