Technology may come into road tennis

WITH THE stakes rising as champions now win motor cars and lucrative cash prizes, technological footage could be used to determine line calls in future tournaments staged by the Professional Road Tennis Association (PTRA).

PTRA’s chief executive officer Dale Clarke made this revelation at the conclusion of the Barbados Public Workers’ Cooperative Credit Union’s Monarchs of the Court last Sunday at the Big Rock Arena, Spring Garden Highway.

There were a number of close calls during both the men’s and women’s finals, which resulted in the umpires replaying the points after some spectators prematurely shouted what they felt they had seen.

“Obviously, as we grow, the expectations are great, so we have to go back to the drawing board. What we like to do is to keep improving on everything that we have done,” Clarke said.

Clarke acknowledged that even though the standard of officiating in the tournament was very high, he believes the time has come for video replays to decide disputed calls.

“That was one thing that we used to get knocked on in past tournaments but we are not going to rest there; we are going to give the officials more training.
