Centenarian Hermione Parris was the toast of the St John Post Office’s customer appreciation day yesterday.

Parris, who has cashed her pension cheques at the Four Roads office since she was 65 years old, was described by friends and family as a kind, friendly, active woman who deserved to be recognised as the oldest person living in the Pool Land 2 community.

Toni Best, acting postmistress there, said while the Barbados Postal Service celebrated customer appreciation day last week at the Bridgetown headquarters, her branch wanted to do something special for Parris.

Parris, who will be celebrating her 101st birthday in December, was a seamstress and plantation worker before she retired.

She has seven children and still travels with members of her church – Tichborne Apostolic Church – to St Vincent and the Grenadines on missionary trips.

Daughter Wilhelmina Wint said the centenarian loved to eat ground provisions, especially yams, and her healthy food choices were part of the reason she had no ailments. (SB)
