Barbados men’s team gave a herculean effort to defeat Mexico 6-4 and finish fifth on the final day of the 2017 Indoor Pan American Hockey Cup at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall in Guyana on Saturday.

Mexico drew first blood in the third minute when Cristhopher Vigueras flicked a cross towards the goal from close to the baseline that Barbados custodian Keenan Knight thought was going wide. He stepped out the way but the ball went in the goal.

But the Barbadians quickly responded, converting a penalty corner in the fifth minute using a “back-to-the-pusher” routine. The ball went from Che Warner, to Neil Franklin and back to Warner for a comfortable deflection into the goal.

Mexico, employing a two-man press and earning a penalty corner in the 12th, went ahead 2-1 as captain Alan Baas whipped his shot past Knight. Baas gave Mexico a 3-1 lead at half-time when he beat a diving Knight for his second goal. (PR/EZS)
