UWI Blackbirds won their first senior title while Chargers men floated in seventh heaven when the Goddard Enterprises Limited Volleyball Knockout Finals climaxed on Sunday night at the Wildey Gymnasium.

The Blackbirds, led by veteran Sharon Bovell and Belizean libero Tisha Solis flew from two sets down to deny the defending champions Pan American International Insurance Warrens in five tense sets. The Blackbirds took the match and the crown 25-9, 24-26, 19-25, 25-23, 15-13.

That would have capped a fantastic weekend for Bovell and key attacker Dania Hamilton, who had graduated with a bachelor’s in accounting and a masters in sports management from Cave Hill on Saturday night.

However, while Bovell showed her value by converting every play into gold, Hamilton was sub par particularly after Warrens surged in the decider and threatened to retain their title. But the play of Solis, who was superb in passing and defence along with two lesser-rated players, saved the night for the Blackbirds. (KB)
