AND A WOMAN shall lead them.
For the first time in the history of the Barbados Olympic Association a woman is at the helm. Corporate lawyer Sandra Osborne received an early birthday gift when she captured the presidency of the Barbados Olympic Association in elections last night at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre.
Osborne, who will celebrate her 66th birthday on Sunday, was battling Colonel Trevor Browne and former Cabinet member Noel Lynch to replace long-serving president Steve Stoute, who held the post since 1996.
Osborne swept to victory with a massive 24 votes, with Browne gaining ten and Lynch two.
Prior to the vote, Stoute indicated that contrary to previous elections the 11 executive members were giving up their right to vote. Both Lynch and Browne had contended that the 11 votes from the executive created a possibility of one candidate gaining a tremendous advantage in receiving the block of executive votes.
Osborne indicated that she was overwhelmed by the results and recognised that she was trying to replace a giant on the local, regional and international scene in Stoute. (KB)
